Q&A with Trevor Zehring
Can I have Marketplace and Medicare coverage at the same time
Answer: The short answer is that once you are enrolled in Medicare Part A, you generally should not have a Marketplace plan at the same time, as the two are not meant to work together. If you are already on Medicare, you are no longer eligible to receive any premium tax credits or financial assistance for a Marketplace plan, which means you would be paying full price for coverage you may not even need. In most cases, if you have Medicare, it makes much more sense to focus on plans designed to work alongside it — like a Medicare Supplement or Medicare Advantage plan — to help fill in the gaps of your coverage. There are some very specific situations where people may have both temporarily, such as when someone is transitioning onto Medicare for the first time, but those situations are usually short-term. This is exactly why working with someone who understands both systems is so valuable — so you're not paying for overlapping coverage or missing out on benefits you're entitled to!
Does my Medicare Advantage plan cover me when I travel to another state?
Answer: Great question, and the answer really depends on the type of Medicare Advantage plan you have! Most Medicare Advantage plans are network-based, meaning they have a specific service area, so coverage can look different when you're traveling outside of that area. In most cases, your plan will still cover emergency care and urgently needed services no matter where you are in the country, so you can have peace of mind knowing you're protected in a true emergency. However, routine care — like a regular doctor's visit or a follow-up appointment — may not be covered out of network depending on your plan type, which is something many people don't realize until they need it. If you travel frequently or spend extended time in another state, it's really worth taking a closer look at your plan options, as some plans are better suited for travelers than others. That's exactly the kind of thing I love helping my clients think through, so feel free to ask me anything — I'm here to make sure your coverage works for your lifestyle!
Can I change my Medicare Part D plan anytime, or only during certain enrollment periods?
Answer: That's a great question, and one that many people aren't sure about — so you're definitely not alone! Medicare Part D plans can only be changed during certain enrollment periods throughout the year, the most important being the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 through December 7, where any changes made take effect January 1. If you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan that includes drug coverage, you also have an additional window from January 1 through March 31 called the Open Enrollment Period. Life doesn't always follow a schedule, so there are also Special Enrollment Periods available for certain situations — like moving to a new area, losing other coverage, or qualifying for Extra Help with costs — that allow you to make changes outside of the regular windows. Outside of these periods, your current plan stays in place for the rest of the year, which is why reviewing your coverage every fall is so important, since drug costs and covered medications can change from one year to the next. That's exactly what I'm here to help you with, so you never have to navigate any of this alone!
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: A Medicare agent takes the confusion out of the process by walking you through your options in plain language and helping you find a plan that actually fits your life. And since their services are typically free to you, there's really no reason not to have someone in your corner who knows the system inside and out.
