We met Tommy at a seminar he put together on Medicare and we followed up with him at his Office. He is very knowledgeable, explained all of the ins and outs, costs, his experience with various carriers and his recommendations based on our specific needs. It was a wonderful experience! I would recommend Overton Agency

Q&A with Tommy Overton

What is the best MAPD plan in South Carolina?

Answer: There is not a "best" plan other than the plan that is right for you. This is a common mistake I see with Medicare Advantage plans and that is asking loved ones and other which plan is "best". Plans that are right for one person may be wrong for another person, it depends on which plans covers your doctors and medications properly and fits within you budget. Each plan can vary greatly on your out-of-pocket costs based on your situation.

Which is better: a Medicare Advantage Plan or a Medigap policy?

Answer: The answer to which is "better" is based on your scenario, your health, doctors and prescriptions, and budget. Medigap policies like a Plan G or Plan N are more comprehensive than Medicare Advantage plans in most locations. You'll pay a higher premium for a Medigap Plan G or Plan N compared to Medicare Advantage Plans. Medigap plans do not have any networks to deal with. Medicare Advantage plans work better when you stay in-network. Medigap Plan G will be your most comprehensive plan available today for most new people becoming eligible for Medicare today.

How does Medigap Plan K compare to Plan G for someone on a tight budget?

Answer: You would be responsible for a whole lot more out-of-pocket on a Plan G compared to a Plan K, which has $8,000 maximum out-of-pocket compared to $283 with Plan G. In my area Plan K is about $60 per month less than a Plan G. I'd recommend looking at a Plan N or maybe event Plan HDG if you are looking to same money, but want to stay on Original Medicare combined with a Supplement.

Are Medicare agents paid by specific insurance to sign up clients to their plans only

Answer: Generally agents are paid commissions by whichever plan you and the agent chooses is the right fit for you. These commissions do not come out of your pocket. You could try to figure out Medicare and find the correct plan for you based on your research or you can have an agent help guide you to choose a plan. Agents should never be charging fees on top of enrolling you into a plan.

How often should I review my plan to make sure my therapy is still covered?

Answer: Great question. It depends upon what type of plan. If have Medicare Advantage, review it during any available enrollment period including the Annual Enrollment Period from October 15 - December 7 as well as the Open Enrollment Period, which is January 1 - March 31. If you have a Medicare Supplement then you can review it any time of the year and change to a lower cost plan, if you qualify.
