Q&A with Timothy Riordan

I’ve talked to a few Medicare agents near me already, and everyone seems to push something different. How do I know you’re genuinely looking out for me and not just trying to make a sale?

Answer: As a Medicare broker, my job is to present the products available in the marketplace and then make a reccommendation based on a good needs analysis with the client. My role is to find out what is most important to the client and then find the products that will give them access to the care and coverage they are looking for. The customer ALWAYS comes first!

What's the key difference in how Medicare Advantage and Medigap handle out-of-network providers?

Answer: Typically, the reason people chose a Medigap plan is to have access to more doctors & hospitals that accept the reimbursement from Medicare. Freedom to chose your doctors is a fundamental tenant of the Medigap product.

I signed up for a Medicare Advantage HMO, and I'm wondering if I can see a cardiologist out of network without paying everything myself.

Answer: The way to maximize your opportunity through a Medicare Advantage is to chose a plan that will give you access to the doctors and hospitals you want to go to. With the general move by the insurance companies away from PPO plans, now more than ever it's important to work with an experienced Medicare Broker who can guide you through the sign up process and be there to advocate for if you to see a provider that is out of network.

How do eligibility rules differ for those on TRICARE or Veterans Affairs (VA) benefits?

Answer: For those that have earned VA benefits the goal is to find a Medicare plan that can add another layer of coverage to the benefits they are entitled to through their military service. The flexibilty to go to a local doctor or fill a prescription at a local pharmacy so that don't need to run to the VA hospital for everything. Typically, a low cost Medicare Advantage plan will achieve this goal and not impact their VA benefits.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: The primary reason to work with a Medicare agent or broker is that the plans are now changing every year. Where as before, people tended to reamain in the same coverage for multiple years without having to change. That is NO longer feasible for most consumers so the experience of a Medicare broker is more important than ever before.

How can I make sure my Medicare plan will cover future treatments for my illness?

Answer: The Center for Medicare and Medicaid services sets the rules that the insurance carriers must follow. This is a benefit for the consumer because it sets medically appropriate guidelines so that the public can be sure that their medical needs will be met by their insurance provider. This should provide the public with a sense of confidence that their future treatments will be covered in a safe and appropriate manner!
