Q&A with Teresa Wagner
I turn 65 in January 2027, have disability Medicare with an ESKD C-SNP in Indiana (47331), and am awaiting a kidney transplant. I need coverage for out-of-pocket costs and post-transplant medications, including immunosuppressants, plus an O+ or O- kidney donor.
Answer: It sounds like you may want to consider a Medicare supplement since you will be turning 65 you can get onto a supplement without medical underwriting. The other option would be to get a hospital indemnity plan that can help cover out of pocket costs.
I'm worried about choosing the wrong plan and being stuck with it. How often can I change my Medicare coverage?
Answer: Learn how Medicare works and make your decision based off of that educated decision. If you are considering a Medicare Advantage plan, then you need to work with an agent that can explain the differences in each plan and find one that aligns with your needs. With Medicare Advantage plans there is annual enrollment from Oct 15-Dec 7 and then there is an open enrollment period from Jan 1-March 31 that you can change to a different plan if needed. You could also have a special enrollment period if you have certain health conditions, if you qualify for medicaid or extra help or if you move.
How can I get dental and vision coverage with Medicare?
Answer: If you have Original Medicare (your red, white, and blue Medicare card), with or without a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan and/or a Medicare Part D prescription drug plan, you will need to purchase separate dental and vision coverage if you want those benefits.
If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan, your coverage may already include dental, vision, and hearing benefits. To confirm your coverage, review your plan's Summary of Benefits, contact your insurance carrier, or speak with your licensed insurance agent.
If your current plan does not provide the dental or vision coverage you need, you may be able to purchase a separate plan through a licensed insurance agent.
Why is regular Medicare better than an advantage plan?
Answer: Medicare is based on your individual needs, some people feel a supplement is better and others feel an advantage plan is better. Your income, your health and your lifestyle all play a huge part in what makes one better than the other for you. That's why it's critical to work with a trusted agent that understands and can explain the differences.
