Q&A with Shelly Lessard
I missed my Medigap window by a few months and now no one will cover me without underwriting. Why isn't this rule more well known?
Answer: They have what is a Guaranteed Issue for your 1st initial enrollment period. If you have not added a Medicare Advantage plan and you are also late to choose that. Now, during Annual Enrollment, 10/15 - 12/07, is the time to do it. As far as a Medigap, you will have to answer health questions and go through underwriting.
I have Medicare Part A and B since 06/01/2006 because of disability. My husband retired on 4/1/2024, and I now have no other coverage except for Medicare Parts A and B because I missed open enrollment for insurance coverage. Note: SS dropped SSI and changed it to straight SS. Please help.
Answer: Hi! You can choose a plan during Annual Enrollment Period, but you will be subject to the late enrollment penalty for not having a Part D plan. That penalty is forever; it never goes away. You should reach out to an agent to help you and help walk you through the plans.
I signed up for part A. I'm still on my husband's insurance so I didn't sign up for part B. is there a form I need to fill out stating I'm still on my husbands insurance?
Answer: Hi! You won't need to do anything until your Husband retires and you are going to lose your Group health insurance. Enroll in B, and you will want it to start B the same time that your group coverage is ending and have your secondary in place. Once you get the B in place, I suggest getting a hold of SS to start that process 2-3 months prior to your group ending, and once you obtain the start date for Part B, that is when you sit with an agent and go over your options.
