Q&A with Shauneen Sullivan

If I have Medigap or secondary insurance, does it cover my Medicare Part A and Part B deductibles?

Answer: If you have a Medigap policy in addition to your Original Medicare Parts A & B then you will have coverage for the Medicare Part A deductible but possibly not the Part B deductible. The Part B deductible in 2026 is $283. The most popular Medigap plans G & N do not cover the Part B deductible. However if you got on Medicare prior to January 1, 2021, the you can opt for a Plan F that covers the Part B deductible as well as the Part A deductible.

Why do some clients ignore your advice and end up in bad Medicare plans-what makes them resistant?

Answer: The main reason that clients ignore advice is because of a lack of trust they have with a new advisor. Another reason is that seniors don’t like change. They are hesitant to switch plans because they fear the unknown. They don’t want to make a mistake. They want to have a Plan just like their neighbors and friends have. A different Plan you propose to them might put them in a better situation financially or with more comprehensive coverage. But, they would rather choose what they know and understand or makes them feel more secure.

I chose Original Medicare to keep my doctors, but now I'm drowning in bills. Should I have gone with Advantage instead?

Answer: Original Medicare is great coverage when paired with a Medigap policy. Original Medicare Part A & B pays up to 80% of your medical bills. A Medigap policy will pick up the remaining 20% after a small annual deductible is met ($283 in 2026).

It makes me think that you do not have a secondary insurance such as Medigap. This would mean that you have up to 20% out of your own pocket.

With Medicare Advantage, you have out of pocket in the form of Co-pays for services. But it's not unlimited as there is a Maximum annual out of pocket for these plans. Once you hit it, then the plan typically pays all the medical costs after that.

Original Medicare paired with a Medigap policy is more comprehensive coverage for medical, but you have a separate premium to pay for the Medigap policy.

The Medicare Advantage plans can be $0/mo in some areas.

Why is regular Medicare better than an advantage plan?

Answer: Regular, or what's called Original Medicare, is not necessarily better than a Medicare Advantage Plan. They are actually two different types of coverage. They work differently. Original Medicare paired with a Medicare Supplement, known as Medigap, is definitely more comprehensive coverage than a Medicare Advantage Plan. There is also an extra premium each month you have to pay for this Supplement.

Original "regular" Medicare by itself with no supplement is not recommended. There could be unlimited medical bills to you of 20%, after medicare pays their 80% cost share.

Some Medicare Advantage HMO or PPO plans cost $0 per month, yet you will have out of pocket costs and copays for some Doctor visits, tests. treatments and hospitizaions. It is a "pay as you go" type of plan that has a Network of providers. You may also need to get a referral to see a specialist

The Medigap plan doesnt have a network, and you do not need a referral to see a Specialist. As long as the Provider accepts Medicare then then Medigap Supplement will pay after Medicare pays their share of the bill.

Medigap is unaffordable for some people. In this case, a Medicare Advantage Plan may be the next best thing.

What's the financial risk of sticking with Original Medicare without a Medigap plan?

Answer: The financial risks associated with having only Original Medicare without a Medigap policy can be quite substantial. Original Medicare Parts A & B will cover up to 80% of your medical bills, assuming you see participating providers of Medicare. The remaining 20% of the medical bills that Medicare doesn't cover, would be your responsibility to pay. It is also an unlimited amount, meaning there is no cap or stop loss on this amount. In the event of a catastrophic illness or medical issue the costs can be quite high. A Medigap policy would pick up the remaining 20% of costs that Medicare doesn't cover. Your out of pocket costs would only be the monthly premium for your Plan and a small annual deductible ($257 in 2025) depending on your type of Medigap Plan.
