Q&A with Shannan Pruitt
What do seniors often misunderstand about Medicare's coverage for long-term care?
Answer: Medicare does not cover long term care however what Medicare does cover is skilled nursing. In essence you would get 100 days covered by Medicare but only after meeting all qualifications Medicare sets before being allowed into a skilled nursing facility. Skilled nursing is rehabilitation only. Meaning you are getting some sort of Medicare approved therapy and are progressively getting better. You are not living there. You are going home after you get through therapy and are well enough to live on your own.
How do I know if my prescriptions will cost more next year?
Answer: You will not know the cost of medication for 2027 until new plans are released in October. The prescription deductible, copay, coinsurance, max out of pocket and tier level structures can change from plan year to plan year. Make certain that you have your medications evaluated every year to make certain you are on the absolute best fit for your specific medication list. If you are on Medicare you can compare plans October 15th-December 7th of every year. This is your annual enrollment period. Your new drug plan will not take effect until the following January 1st.
Does Medicare cover supplements, herbs, homeopathy or other natural / alternative-medicine treatments?
Answer: No Medicare does no cover any natural health treatments. Medicare only covers medically necessary procedures and test.
I'm getting conflicting information about whether Medicare covers my specific medication. How can I get a definitive answer?
Answer: It’s going to determine what plan you have. Your Medicare drug plan will have a specific drug formulary. So you will need to have your Medicare agent to look at your drug plans formulary to see if your medication is covered. It shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes to be able to tell you. They should be able to also tell your copay or coinsurance and if it will have a deductible or not
Should Medicare cover dental, vision, and hearing, or would that just make it more expensive for everyone?
Answer: There is no way Medicare could afford to cover these extra non life threatening benefits. Medicare is medically necessary. Medicare was never meant to cover everything. Medicare does not cover LTC either. There’s simply not enough money set aside to cover these extra benefits.
Isn't it suspicious that Medicare Advantage plans offer gift cards and incentives to enroll?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans by federal law cannot offer an enticement to get enrollments into their plans. That’s the prime reason Medicare agents are not allowed to even buy you a meal at a carrier specific sales event. There are no Medicare Advantage plans offering gift cards or anything else to get you to sign up for a plan and if an agent is offering you a gift card or anything else to entice you it’s illegal and maybe you might want to find a new agent that is federally compliant. I don’t think you would hire a convicted felon that robbed the store to come in and clean your house. You would want to deal with someone honest, law abiding and trustworthy. Would you not want the same with your Medicare Agent/Broker? Someone you can trust, law abiding and trustworthy?
Should I keep original Medicare or go with an Part C, Medicare Advantage plan? What is better?
Answer: I would definitely with out reservation enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan before ever staying with original Medicare A and B. I can explain with one benefit and that the max out of pocket Advantage plans have to offer by federal law.
This max out of pocket will protect you if you have a bad health year so you’re limited, protected on what you would spend on Medicare approved health care. Keep in mind if you’re trying to keep your out of pocket cost at a minimum you may want to to consider adding a hospital indemnity to your Medicare advantage plan. Even adding this you’re still saving more money going this route than with a supplement. Just keep in mind Medicare advantage plans are not Medicare supplements and you will have to get prior authorization and need to stay in network for the most cost savings with advantage plans. But they do offer additional benefits supplements or original Medicare don’t offer. I hope that helps you make your decision.
