Shane Thomas, Medicare Insurance Broker

About Me

Shane started his self-employed career in 2006 working under the name of Shane Thomas Insurance, INC. He first started out as an insurance broker working with American National. With his life and health license, he was positioned to assist clients with auto/home/disability and life insurance.

In 2008 he found what would be his calling and passion which was to help those on Medicare. He started out as an independent captive agent for UnitedHealthcare. This allowed him to gain excellent training and build a foundation to support his Medicare clients. He would meet with individuals and groups to assist them when they were on Medicare A and B. He would assist them in finding a Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement and/or Part D plan that was best suited for them. During his tenure as a captive agent with UnitedHealthcare, he received many awards. He received awards for being a top producing agent, MVP, and sat a Medicare Council for multiple years. He was also selected to move to a management role starting in 2016 all while still maintaining building his personal clients.

In 2019 he felt the need to move outside of a captive model to position himself as broker to better meet the needs of his clients. He is now the Principal for Integrity Health Advisors. This move has helped him assist those on Medicare with all the major carriers and products, not just UnitedHealthcare. This provides a well-rounded approach to assist those that are on Medicare. This has opened the doors to offer hospital indemnity, dental, and vision plans for his members for a one-stop-shop approach.

His role at Integrity Health Advisors also now includes providing an agency for new and seasoned agents to call home. IHA provides a place for agents to get the training, support, and tools needed to build a successful Medicare business here in Colorado and beyond.

Q&A with Shane Thomas

I live in California but might move to another state next year. How will my Medicare coverage change if I relocate?

Answer: If you have a Medicare Advantage plan or a Part D, you will need to enroll in a new plan. If you have a Supplement, you will need to call the carrier to see if you can carry it with you to the new state. Most of the time you can carry over your Supplement.

How do you stay up to date with changes in Medicare policies and plan options each year?

Answer: We are constantly going through 'continuing education' courses, classes and dialog with our insurance carriers, in addition to our standard yearly training on all new plans once they are introduced.

Does Medicare have a deductible?

Answer: Medicare Part B does have an annual deductible of $283, and Part D Prescription plans can only charge a maximum deductible amount of $615.

How do I handle billing issues if something is wrong on a Medicare statement?

Answer: Generally speaking, Medicare.gov will be the best place to handle any billing issues - they have a chat feature on the website and a phone number you can call to resolve issues.

Can you describe a time when you helped a client navigate a complex Medicare issue?

Answer: The timing of this question could not have been better. Just yesterday (5/27), we received a call from a client who was overwhelmed, confused, and in urgent need of guidance after unexpectedly losing his health plan coverage.

We immediately stepped in to assess the situation and determine the best path forward. After doing extensive research into his coverage history, medications, providers, and current healthcare needs, we uncovered the issue: he had previously been enrolled in a DSNP plan but lost eligibility after his Medicaid coverage became inactive. As a result, he was disenrolled from his plan and left with only Medicare Parts A & B and a standalone PDP plan.

At the same time, he and his social worker were actively working to restore his Medicaid eligibility. Knowing how critical timing was, we quickly gathered all the necessary information, including his 12 medications, provider network needs, and the fact that he was receiving dialysis treatments. From there, we identified a plan that would properly support his healthcare needs and moved immediately to get him enrolled.

Because technology was a challenge for him, we didn’t stop there. Within a few hours, we personally drove to his residence to meet with him face-to-face and assist him through the enrollment process to ensure everything was completed correctly and without added stress.

The client was extremely grateful for how quickly we responded and for the personal attention and care we provided during such a difficult situation. We also reassured him that we will continue monitoring his Medicaid status and help transition him back into a DSNP plan once his Medicaid becomes active again.

This is exactly why we do what we do — helping clients navigate complex Medicare situations and stepping in when they need an advocate the most.

With the supplements being so expensive in climbing in price every year, what is your take on hospital indemnity policies added with advantage policies?

Answer: Sorry to be vague, but this depends on different factors. IF you are in say CO, and between the ages of 65-70 one could move off a Supplement during Annual Enrollment Period to a MAPD and A hospital Indemnity. This age range is important as a Hospital Indemnity is guarantee issue at this age range. Of course factors such as your health, network of docs, all needed to be factored in before blanketly saying one is better than another. We are here to help dig into your specific needs. Set an appt and lets talk about it.

My doctor wants me to use a smartphone app for medication management and adherence. Are there any Medicare programs that support this type of digital health solution?

Answer: Original Medicare itself does not pay for any standalone medication reminder apps. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan, the carrier could have an app or a feature in the member portal to help you with medication management.
