Q&A with Sean Cusack

If a senior is turning 65 but still working, should they enroll in Medicare or delay it?

Answer: Hello and good morning,

If you are going to continue working and get health insurance through your employer, all you need to do is sign up for part A. It is important that you check with your employer to make sure your health coverage is considered credible though. It means that your health and prescription coverage is equal or greater coverage than medicare offers. If it is not credible, then you will need to sign up for part B&D to avoid any late enrollment penalties.

Thanks,

When will my provider send my Annual Notice of Change?

How can I lower my Medicare Part B premium if my income drops after retirement?

Answer: Hello, great question. When you first sign up for part b, the rate you pay is determined from your last two years of income. When your income goes down after retirement, you can fill out the income related adjustment form. This form can be found on the SSA. Gov website. It will be under the Medicare tab. Choose forms and you will find it.

Thanks,

I've been diagnosed with prediabetes. What preventive services does Medicare cover to help prevent progression to type 2 diabetes?

Answer: Yes, Medicare does offer services to help prevent type 2 diabetes. The Medicare Diabetes Prevention Program (MDPP) Expanded Model provides a structured intervention for individuals with prediabetes. This program includes 16 intensive core sessions and 6 follow-up maintenance sessions, focusing on dietary changes, physical activity, and weight management. Additionally, Medicare covers diabetes screenings and other preventive services for individuals at risk.

Can Medicare Part D deny coverage for a brand-name drug if a generic isn't available?

Answer: Yes, Medicare can deny coverage for a brand-name drug even if no generic equivalent is available. While Medicare drug plans generally cover both generic and brand-name drugs, they may have rules about which drugs are covered and how they are covered, often favoring generics according to CMS. If a plan's formulary (list of covered drugs) doesn't include a specific brand-name drug, even if no generic exists, the plan may deny coverage.

I'm healthy and barely use my coverage, but I'm still paying more every year. Why isn't there a discount for people like me?

Answer: Hello,

Good question. Unfortunatly, the cost of your health plan is not based on what your health is currently. Its is based on the cost of services amongst a large group of people. Hopefully this helps answer your question.
