Q&A with Sandra De Fazio
Will I get an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) every year?
Answer: Yes, you should look out for this notice and review it with a Medicare insurance agent or broker.
I review the ANOC and Summary of Benefits with my clients each year.
I'm turning 65 soon, when can I enroll in Medicare?
Answer: The Medicare rule is to sign up for Part A and/or B as soon as possible when you are eligible. Your opportunity is as early as 3 months before your 65th birthday month, during the month you turn age 65 years old, or within the three months following your birthday month.
I've got Medigap Plan C, and I'm curious if my recent bloodwork is included or if I need to budget for extra costs.
Answer: You might be referring to Part C of Medicare, which is a Medicare Advantage Plan. Your Medicare Broker or the plan you are enrolled in should have reviewed the Summary of benefits with you at enrollment. The fact that you call it "Plan C" shows you are lacking the basics of Medicare. Blood work is usually covered at 100%, but sometimes with a CoPay or CoInsurance of up to 20 %. Please call your plan to confirm your coverage.
I'm on a supplemental Plan N, and I'm curious if my recent MRI is covered or if I'll get stuck with a big bill.
Answer: Anyone who has Plan N is required to have Original Medicare Parts A & B, which cover eighty percent (80%) of medically necessary services. Plan N is a Medicare Supplement Plan that covers (pays) twenty percent (20%) of medical services approved by Original Medicare. As such, Plan N supplements Original Medicare (Parts A & B).
I'm on a fixed income and struggling to afford my medications. What's this Extra Help program I've heard about for Medicare Part D?
Answer: The Low Income Subsidy (LIS) extra help Medicare program is to help Medicare beneficiaries pay monthly premiums, annual deductibles, and co-payments related to the Medicare Part D. An individual must have an annual income below $23,475.00 and resources must be less than $17,60.00. The annual income for a married couple must be below $31,725.00 and resources less than $35,130.00. Active enrollment in a Medicare Prescription Drug plan is required to get this benefit.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Independent Local Medicare Agents are brokers contracted with a variety of health insurance carriers. We have the tools and knowledge necessary to help you with Medicare insurance. We can help you find a Medicare doctor near you, look up prescription medications in different formularies, or search which Medical group(s) your doctor is contracted with.
What are the types of Medicare Advantage plans?
Answer: Medicare Advantage Plans are Part C of Medicare, which consist of Medicare Pat A and B. They could be HMOs or PPOs with or without prescription drug coverage. There are Medicare Advantage Plans designed for people with a chronic conditions, such as Diabetes, End Stage Renal Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, COPD, etc. Additionally, Dual Special Needs Plans are for beneficiaries with Medicare and Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California).
