Sam was very helpful and professional with getting me signed up for my insurance needs. He took his time and explained the best options to suit my situation and answered all of my questions. Additional products/options were offered; however, there was never any undue pressure to purchase, unlike other consultants from various companies. I will definitely follow up with Sam for my additional insurance products.

So thankful to have attended one of Sam’s seminars at the Foley Public Library. He was patient, very very knowledgeable and professional. Gave him my name and number and he has since called as scheduled while providing critical information to assist in helping me find the best insurance solutions for my personal needs.

Q&A with Sam Duffield

I'm a green card holder who's been in the US for 4 years and turning 65 soon. Am I eligible for Medicare?

Answer: You aren't eligible for Medicare until you have lived in the U.S. for 5 years. In most cases, you also need to be age 65 or older.

Do I need to do anything for Annual Enrollment Period (AEP)?

Answer: If you are happy with your coverage, you don't have to do anything during AEP unless your coverage is changing or terminating. Health needs and prescriptions can change from year to year, so it's never a bad idea to review your coverage during AEP.

What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?

Answer: Medicare has become very confusing. I enjoy helping people understand it so they can pick the best coverage for their needs.

Will I be penalized if I do not enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?

Answer: Yes, there typically is a penalty for not enrolling into Medicare at 65. But you won't be penalized if you delay Medicare because you are still working and keeping insurance through your work (as long as there are more than 20 employees on the employer coverage)

What should people know about Medicare and its parts?

Answer: Part A is for inpatient coverage. Part B is for outpatient coverage. Part D is for prescription drug coverage. Most people that stay on original Medicare (Parts A and B) also get a Medicare supplement. The private alternative to Original Medicare is Medicare Advantage, which is also referred to as Part C.

My income fluctuates significantly year to year from investment distributions. How can I avoid IRMAA surcharges when I have an unusually high-income year?

Answer: They always look at your tax return from two years ago. But if you can provide the social security office a more recent tax return that shows your income was lower, you can possibly get the IRMAA charges lowered as well.

Do Medicare Advantage plans really save seniors money in the long run? Why or why not?

Answer: It depends on how much you use it. If you get sick a lot, having Medicare with a Medicare supplement can save you a lot of money. But if you don't go to the doctor much, Medicare Advantage plans can save you money because the monthly premiums are typically lower.

I'm a smoker trying to quit. What smoking cessation benefits does Medicare offer for someone in my situation?

Answer: Part B of Medicare covers eight smoking cessation counseling sessions per twelve month period. Some Part D prescription drug plans may cover medications to help you quit.

I've heard about Medicare fraud. What steps can I take to protect myself from scams related to Medicare?

Answer: Don't give out information when people call you. If you give out information, it needs to be from you initiating the call.
