Q&A with Robert Freitas

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Working with a licensed Medicare agent can save you time, reduce confusion, and help you avoid costly mistakes. Medicare has many parts, plan options, enrollment periods, and rules that can be overwhelming to navigate on your own.

A good Medicare agent will:

* Help you understand the differences between Original Medicare, Medicare Advantage, Medicare Supplement (Medigap), and Part D prescription drug plans.

* Compare plans from multiple insurance companies to help you find coverage that fits your healthcare needs and budget.

* Explain provider networks, prescription drug coverage, and estimated out-of-pocket costs before you enroll.

* Make sure you don’t miss important enrollment deadlines or face unnecessary penalties.

* Continue to be a resource after you enroll, helping you review your coverage each year as your needs or available plans change.

The best part is that there is typically no additional cost to work with a licensed Medicare agent. The insurance company pays the agent, not you, so you receive personalized guidance at no extra cost.

Choosing the right Medicare coverage is an important decision. Having an experienced agent by your side can give you confidence that you’re selecting a plan that’s a good fit both now and in the years ahead.

I need a hearing aid but I've heard Medicare doesn't cover them. Is there any way around this?

Answer: Here’s a revised version that includes that point while staying accurate:

This is a great question, and it’s one I hear often.

Original Medicare (Parts A & B) generally does not cover hearing aids or routine hearing exams for fitting hearing aids. However, Medicare Part B may cover diagnostic hearing and balance exams if your doctor orders them to determine whether you have a medical condition.

The good news is that there are still several options:

* Many Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans include hearing benefits, such as routine hearing exams and an allowance toward hearing aids. The amount of coverage varies by plan.

* Some Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance companies offer optional add-on benefit packages (available in certain states and with certain plans) that may include discounts or coverage for hearing services and hearing aids. These aren’t part of the standardized Medigap benefits, so availability and coverage depend on the insurer.

* Over-the-counter (OTC) hearing aids can be a more affordable option for adults with mild to moderate hearing loss.

* Some hearing aid manufacturers, nonprofit organizations, and state assistance programs also offer discounts or financial assistance.

Before purchasing hearing aids, it’s worth reviewing all of your coverage options. Depending on where you live and the plans available, you may be able to find benefits that significantly reduce your out-of-pocket costs. A licensed Medicare agent can help you compare the options available in your area.
