Q&A with Nick Harris
What is the Medicare Advantage 5-Star Special Enrollment Period? Is this different from '"OEP'" and "AEP"?
Answer: OEP happens annually from January 1st through March 31st and it allows any member of a Medicare Advantage plan to switch to a different Medicare Advantage Plan during that time. AEP is from Oct 15th through December 7th and it is a time when anyone who has Medicare (not just those who are already on a Medicare Advantage plan) can elect for a plan for the coming year.
The 5 Star Special Enrollment Code allows any medicare member who has both A and B (on a plan or not) to join a Medicare advantage plan that has a 5 star rating. This code can be used at any time between December 8th and November 30th.
What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?
Answer: Getting to know them on a personal level, building a lasting relationship, and by the grace of God being able to provide valuable insight that saves people thousands of dollars out of their pocket!
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: A Medicare agent works for you to give you guidance and confidence that you are on the most cost effective plan for you and your family. It’s someone who will help you navigate the confusing world of Medicare each year as laws and regulations change.
As a senior, what should I know about the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage before I choose?
Answer: What you need to know is that with Original Medicare you need not worry about provider networks or the insurance company “authorizing” treatment. Those are the two main things I see that scare folks away from Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C).
With that said, Original Medicare only includes Hospital (Part A) and Medical (Part B) and it covers 80% of the bill, leaving you with 20% and no maximum out of pocket (NO CEILING ON COSTS).
If you want to keep original Medicare you should probably get a Medigap Plan (also known as a Supplement) that covers the remaining 20% that Original Medicare doesn’t.
I have the majority of my clients on Medicare Advantage due to affordability and weighing out the pros and cons for their individual situation and financial position.
