Q&A with Monica McCauley

Do I need to notify Medicare or Social Security if I move to a new address?

Answer: Yes. Whenever you move, Medicare and Social Security need to know what plans you are eligible for. Your existing plan may not be available in your new area.

I'm on Original Medicare with no supplement, and I'm wondering how much I'd pay if I need an ambulance ride to the hospital tomorrow.

Answer: Under Original Medicare (Part B), the annual out-of-pocket cost for a medically necessary ambulance ride is typically 20% of the Medicare-approved amount, plus any remaining portion of the annual Part B deductible ($257 in 2025). For a typical ground transport costing $1,000, this equates to roughly $200–$250+ per trip, without a Medigap policy.

My friend lives in a different city and has a much more detailed Medicare plan. Is their plan dependent on their location?

Answer: Most likely correct. Medicare Advantage plans are regional, and not all plans are available in all areas, and the benefits can differ.

I signed up for part A. I'm still on my husband's insurance so I didn't sign up for part B. is there a form I need to fill out stating I'm still on my husbands insurance?

Answer: No. As long as it's creditable coverage, you don't have to do anything. Just don't accept Part B if they auto sign you up; if they do, then just decline coverage.

Is my Medicare deductible supposed change from year to year?

Answer: Yes, Medicare deductible changes each year. The Centers for Medicare designate each year what the deductible will be each year.
