Q&A with Misty Scaggs
I picked the plan with the lowest premium, but now every doctor visit feels like a surprise bill. Should I have gone with a higher premium instead?
Answer: When you say the word "premium" I am assuming that you currently have a Medicare Supplement that pays secondary to Orginal Medicare. If so can you please tell me what letter plan you have so I can know exactly what you cost would be for the doctor visits. It usually is printed on your ID Card. It could be "N", "G", "K"....etc.
My pharmacist mentioned the Medicare "donut hole" is going away in 2025. What does that actually mean for me?
Answer: This means that once you have paid $2,000 out of pocket, you will no longer be responsible for copays, deductibles & coinsurance for your covered prescriptions for the remainder of the calendar year.
Isn't it concerning that Medicare Advantage plans are taking over the system?
Answer: I don't look at it that way. There are still numerous Medicare Supplements available. The addition of more Medicare Advantage Plans makes it easier for us as Agents to find a plan that works best for our clients. Many are not financially able to afford Medicare Supplements as they also have to purchase a drug plan, dental & vision coverages as well. Medicare Advantage plans also allow those who are healthy to only pay as they use the plan.
I exercise regularly and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Does Medicare offer any incentives or additional benefits for preventive health behaviors?
Answer: Yes, most Medicare Advantage plans & some Medicare Supplements have no cost or discounted gym memberships as well as rewards for completing healthy activities such as vaccinations, annual routine exam and at home health assessments.
I have Original Medicare, a Medigap Plan G, and a Part D plan, but I'm still facing high costs for my specialty medication. What options exist for someone in my situation?
Answer: As of 2025 Medicare offers a Prescription Payment Plan which would allow you to spread out your costs throughout the year. You could also explore manufacturer assistance programs, checking for lower-cost generic or alternative drugs, or using a mail-order pharmacy.
What's a red flag in a phone call that it might be a Medicare scam targeting my personal info?
Answer: A red flag in a Medicare scam call is when the caller pressures you for personal information like your Medicare number, Social Security number, or bank details over the phone, especially if they claim to be from Medicare or a related organization. Legitimate Medicare representatives will not call you unexpectedly and ask for this type of information. Other red flags include offers of free or discounted medical supplies or services in exchange for your information, or demands for immediate action or payment.
You should not have to divulge any personal information such as your Social Security #, Medicare # or bank information. Other red flags would include offering anything free or saying you need to apply now & they not allow you to call them back.
