Q&A with Merlin Gomez

I picked a PPO for the flexibility, but now every time I go out of network the bills are outrageous. What's the point of even having a PPO?

Answer: A PPO gives you the flexibility to see providers outside the network if needed, but that flexibility usually comes with higher costs. Before I recommend a PPO, I like to review the doctors and specialists you see to make sure as many as possible are in network. I also compare how each PPO covers out-of-network care because some plans are much better than others. I tell my clients to think of going out of network as a backup option rather than something to do regularly, since it can lead to much higher out-of-pocket costs.

Will I get an Annual Notice of Change (ANOC) every year?

Answer: Yes, Medicare carriers usually send out the ANOC (Annual Notice of Change) in late September each year, and members should receive it by September 30. This document explains any changes to their plan for the upcoming year, such as premiums, copays, drug coverage, and benefits. I always encourage people to review it carefully and reach out to their agent so they can understand what’s changing and decide if their current plan is still the best fit.

Do Medicare advisors work with people that have dementia?

Answer: Yes, Medicare advisors can work with people who have dementia, but it usually involves a trusted family member or legal representative. If someone has dementia and is not able to make decisions on their own, an advisor can help their caregiver, spouse, or person with Power of Attorney review plan options and make sure coverage meets their medical and prescription needs. The most important part is having proper consent and authorization in place so everything is done ethically and in the senior’s best interest.

What do I do if I cannot afford my Medicare premiums?

Answer: You can see if you qualify for adult Medicaid or the Medicare savings program through the Medicaid office as well. The Medicare savings program helps pay for your part B premium.

I'm confused about when I can change my Medicare plan. Can you clarify the different enrollment periods for me?

Answer: Hello! You can change your Medicare plan during the annual enrollment period which is every year from October 15-December 7. If you chose a plan during this time, there is also another chance to switch during the open enrollment period for Advantage plans January-March.
