Q&A with Margaret Winter
Won't Medicare run out of money before I can benefit from it?
Answer: Medicare is a government administered program. It is not likely to run out of money in the foreseeable future.
How often should I review my plan to make sure my therapy is still covered?
Answer: To make sure your therapy is still covered, you should review your plan annual notice of change each year to verify coverage. Each year during Annual Enrollment Period, you have the ability to review other plans to determine if therapy is covered and what the co-pays and co-insurance may be.
How do Medicare Savings Programs help with Medicare costs?
Answer: There are four levels of Medicare Savings Programs. Each level has income and asset limits that must be verified with your state of residence. The lower a household income, the greater level of assistance you will receive with a Medicare Savings Program, as long as your asset limits are within the specified amount.
Does Medicare cover hearing aids, or do I have to pay out of pocket?
Answer: Original Medicare does not cover hearing aids. Medicare Advantage plans may offer hearing aid discounts if you choose an in-network provider.
If I move to a rural area, how might that limit my Medicare Advantage plan options?
Answer: When you move to a rural area, the population may be slightly less, therefore, Medicare Advantage plan enrollment and utilization will also be slightly less. Medicare Advantage plans review demographic and utilization data each year to ensure plan profitability and positive actuarial data.
Are Medicare Advantage plans guaranteed issue?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans do not require medical underwriting. Sharing medical history or answering health questions is not part of the Medicare Advantage plan enrollment process. As long as you are entitled to Medicare Parts A and B and you follow the plan rules of the Medicare Advantage plan that you are enrolling in, you will generally be enrolled in the chosen plan without any barriers.
How do you avoid IRMAA surcharges on Medicare premiums?
Answer: Avoiding IRMAA is nearly impossible unless you can amend your tax return or provide substantial reasoning why your life circumstances have changed. If you are a high-income earner, proper planning will help alleviate the stress of the added surcharge. If you are planning on selling assets which will cause significant taxable income, it is best to reach out to your accountant or financial advisor to plan carefully and determine if avoiding IRMAA is even an option.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Medicare agents have the certifications and expertise to guide you along your individual Medicare journey. Enrolling in Medicare can be a completed process to navigate on your own and having an agent advisor to guide you through the nuances, especially at no cost to you, can give you peace of mind that you are reviewing all of your options and making the best-informed decision.
