About Me

I am a former French teacher at Mansfield Senior High school. After 26 years of teaching, and helping beneficiaries part time for the last 15 years, I am now a full-time Health and Life insurance agent/broker. My office is located in downtown Mansfield in the Barrington One building, 3rd floor. I have traveled and lived in many foreign countries (Canada, France, and Colombia, South America). My children are grown and married now, with children of their own, so I get to be the fun-loving "Pop-Pop!" I enjoy them so much! My wife and I enjoy travel, music and exploring new places along with the locals and the food.

Q&A with Marc Carr

How do Medicare Advantage plans make money if many have $0 premiums?

Answer: Part C plans also known as Medicare Advantage, require an enrollee to maintain Part B. Currently Part B is $202.90 per month. Most people have this Part B premium taken out of their social security benefit. What happens next is the Medicare Advantage company receives the Part B money and this satisfies any monthly premium. This is how they offer $0 plans. So it really is not a $0 plan is it? It is at least the $202.90 per month premium.

Do I need to enroll in Medicare if I already have VA health benefits?

Answer: Yes and No. It depends. Veterans are encouraged to sign up for Part B (Medical coverage) even though it comes with a monthly premium. Veterans now gain access to all the civilian doctors and specialists that they might otherwise not have access to. They also gain more benefits from a Medicare Advantage plan, also known as Part C, that they would not be able to have at the VA clinic. So a Veteran does not need to enroll in Medicare, but they miss out on many benefits that they could have otherwise.

What does Medicare Part A cover, and is it really free?

Answer: Part A, also known as Hospital coverage at 80%. It is free because of a beneficiary's work history. They need to have 40 quarter hours (10 years) of contributing to social security. This entitles them to FREE Part A.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: My clients have told me they really appreciate the knowledge and guidance they receive from me as their Medicare agent. They also like having face-to-face interactions in my office. As well, I have a TV screen behind me that shares everything I am looking at on my computer, so they can follow along and ask questions about the plan benefits or costs displayed on the screen.

I use a continuous glucose monitor for my diabetes that connects to my smartphone. Will Medicare cover this technology for someone with my condition?

Answer: Yes, there are Medi Gap plans that will cover this type of technology. There are Medicare Advantage plans (Part C) that will cover this with a copay ranging from $0 to $5

My doctor wants me to try acupuncture for my back pain. Will Medicare cover any of this?

Answer: Yes, but coverage is very limited. This means Medicare Part B will cover acupuncture for low chronic back pain. As well the pain must have lasted 12 months. However Medicare advantage plans aka Part C may offer a more broader coverage that treats other symptoms like migraines, neck pain or arthritis.

Does Medicare cover cancer screenings, and how often can I get them?

Answer: Yes, such as Mammograms and Colonoscopies, these screenings are done at no charge. Other Medicare products are also designed to cover more specific cancer types of screening as well.

Will I be penalized if I do not enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?

Answer: It depends... once you leave employer health insurance from the workplace, you have an 8 month window to enroll into Medicare without a late enrollment penalty for Medical, Part B coverage. But if your 65, still working and have employer coverage, you may delay your Medicare enrollment in order to stay on employer health insurance. However, there is another penalty associated to the Drug coverage, Part D, it has a smaller window time frame. You have 62 days once a you leave employer coverage to get the Part D in place to avoid the late enrollment penalty.

What is one of the the most common misconceptions people have about Medicare?

Answer: One of the most common misconceptions people have about Medicare is not enrolling themselves into a Drug plan. "I'm healthy and don't take a single medication, why would I sign up for one?" As this might be true, one would have a late enrollment penalty placed upon them once they do need a particular medication in the future and consequently have the penalty. I always encourage to enroll into a Part D plan as there are plans available at no monthly premium or even below $10 a month.

What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?

Answer: Clients often feel overwhelmed by the choices in Medicare health insurance. As a former French teacher, I compare the complexities of learning Medicare to mastering a foreign language. My clients value the clarity I provide, trusting me to guide them through these important decisions, which I find deeply rewarding.
