Q&A with Lisa Kirchner
I thought I signed up for both Part A and B when I got my Social Security, but now I'm getting bills for Part B. Did I miss something during the enrollment period?
Answer: No, Part B cost most people $185.00 in 2025 unless you qualify for a form of medicaid that pays your Part B. Some people with very high income pay more than the $185.00.
Part A is free if you worked 10 years. Part B is not. Part B is very important and you will most definitely be dropped for nonpayment if you miss payments. Depending on your medical expenses and medical condition otherwise, there are medicare advantage products (called giveback plans) that lower the cost of Part B monthly.
I just moved from New York to Florida and have Original Medicare with a New York Medigap plan. Do I need to change my coverage?
Answer: While your network is medicare with your medigap product, you must change your stand alone drug plan to a plan offered in the county where you reside. You only have 60 days to do so.
Also, you will get an election and guaranteed issue (no medical underwriting) to choose a medigap product that may open more doors to providers where you live currently. It is always worth getting a quote.
Isn't Medicare Advantage just private health insurance? What is the difference?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans are offered by private health carriers but only to Medicare recipients who have both Part A and Part B of Medicare.
The Advantage of a Medicare Advantage over simply Medicare is that plans provide copays as opposed to 20% Medicare does not pay, have a max out of pocket which Medicare does not provide, includes prescription coverage which Medicare does not offer, and often provides other ancillary benefits like dental and vision which Medicare does not provide.
