Q&A with Katherine Sanneman
My mom is considering switching to a Medicare Advantage plan because her friends say it's better. She's scared of losing her current doctors. How can we check?
Answer: First, everyone's situation is different, so don't just go by your mom's friend. However, Medicare Advantage plans are great. A good broker will look up all doctors and prescriptions and will explain all the differences between a Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Advantage Plan to ensure switching is the right decision for your mom.
What is the biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage?
Answer: You hear that Medicare Advantage plans are managed care as a negative, but every health plan you have ever had is managed care. I interpret that as the insurance having a say in your care. However, keep in mind that MA plans cover everything that original Medicare covers. There are networks of doctors, but in larger cities that isn't an issue. As an agent, I always look up all physicians for customers so they know who is and who is not in network.
Can I enroll in Medicare if I've never paid into Social Security due to working overseas?
Answer: Yes, you can, but you will have a part A premium in addition to your part B premium. Most people get Part A at no cost for working 10 years or 40 quarters paying in. Social Security would be able to verify the cost for you.
