Q&A with Justin Brock
What's the financial risk of sticking with Original Medicare without a Medigap plan?
Answer: 20% unlimited coinsurance, Part B 15% excess charges, and lots of daily hospital copays.. that’s after the smaller deductibles of course..
And you might not be able to get one later.
I'm still working at 67, and I don't know if I need Part B. Why is something so basic so hard to figure out?
Answer: If your group plan is creditable coverage (typically over 20 employees on the plan) you can delay part B and stay on the group plan.
When you retire you’ll get a special election period to start Part B, D and a part B OE to use for any Medicare supplement plan.
Would expanding Medicare to younger Americans improve or hurt the program?
Answer: I would think if done the right way, it would improve the overall state of healthcare, but providers would likely try to get their fingers in there with a little more cheddar and that could cause them to lash out at the idea if they don’t get what they want.
Just remember, everyone has bias.
When should my plan be reviewed?
Answer: The annual election period is typically when plans are reviewed, but if you’re on a Medicare Supplement plan the best time to review it is anytime of year that you get a rate increase letter.. or in some states on your birthday or policy anniversary.
If you don’t know when is best for you, the answer is NOW.
Should Medicare cover dental, vision, and hearing, or would that just make it more expensive for everyone?
Answer: Should it cover it, I believe yes.. but unfortunately our government is already struggling to afford the cost of healthcare.
Somehow we have to reign in out of control medical inflation.
In the meantime we have some excellent stand along options or occasionally we find a core plan that includes to useful dental, vision and hearing coverage!
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: If you find one that is trustworthy (goes over options without bias and has access to many carriers) you should use them to simplify your shopping experience at no additional cost to you.
Of course like anything, there are some not so good agents as well.
Can I change my Medicare plan after open enrollment ends?
Answer: Open enrollment is generally associated with the annual election period between 10/15 and 12/7.
If that is the one you’re asking about, there are some things you can do during other period of the year.
During the annual election period you can change between Medicare advantage plans, part d plans or add a part d or Medicare advantage plan.. you can also leave any of those plans without changing to another if you choose.
During the Open Enrollment period January 1st to March 31st you can change between Medicare Advantage plans but you cannot go from original Medicare to Medicare advantage or shop part D.
The rest of the year you can only make any of these changes if you qualify for some special election period or you’re new to Medicare.
