Q&A with Jeanne LaChance

I've been diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 66. How should I structure my Medicare coverage to ensure I get the mental health care I need?

Answer: Assuming you have Part A and B, estimate the number of visits you anticipate through the year. You can then review various options available through Medicare Advantage or supplement plans to price out the visits and prescriptions known at this time. This will give you a picture of the coverage you wish at different price points. Generally this assessment will bring you to 2-3 good options for you to choose from and budget for to get the care you deserve.

I have Original Medicare, and I'm wondering if I'd save more on my dental cleanings if I switched to a Medicare Advantage plan instead.

Answer: Original Medicare does not include dental coverage. Many Medicare Advantage Plans include dental coverage with cleanings. A broker can review your overall health plan needs and show you options that include dental coverage.

I've had the same Part D plan for years, but this year my insulin shot up in price. Did the Inflation Reduction Act not fix this yet?

Answer: The Inflation Reduction Act put a $35/month copay cap on Part D plans. Each calendar year the plans change. You can review this yearly directly on line at Medicare.gov or with an advisor during the annual enrollment period (October 15 - December 7) to determine your best option for the upcoming year.

I'm interested in nutrition counseling to help manage my diabetes. Will Medicare cover this as preventive care?

Answer: Medicare will cover nutrition counseling as part of diabetic preventative care. A referral from a Medicare provider is necessary. No co-pays or deductible will apply.
