Q&A with Jim Schueth

How do discount cards and resources affect my Medicare Prescription Drug plan?

Answer: Using discount cards like GoodRx on some generic medications can be cheaper than using plans you pay for under Medicare Part D.

Please remember, if you have a Social Security amount under $1,883 and assets (not including your home and car) under $17,220, you may qualify for Extra Help. This means covered drugs will not cost more than $12.15 for a month's supply. These are 2025 income/asset numbers.

Are Medicare Advantage plans really "free," or is that just clever marketing?

Answer: The correct statement should be..... Most Medicare Advantage plans are $0 premium plans that have co-pays, co-insurances and, most importantly, a maximum out-of-pocket in-network.

These plans are frequently called pay-as-you-go plans. You may not spend anything, or you may spend the max out-of-pocket. No one knows what health issues will arise in the future!

What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?

Answer: I've been in this Medicare world 22 years now. I teach clients both options they have (prepaying or pay-as-you-go), then sit back and listen to determine where their comfort level is.

Listening is the most enjoyable part of the meeting.
