Q&A with Isom Julian
Are Medicare Advantage plans guaranteed issue?
Answer: Yes, Medicare Advantage plans are guaranteed issue during your Initial Enrollment Period and during the Annual Enrollment Period. Meaning insurance companies cannot deny you coverage or charge you more based on your health or pre-existing conditions.
I'm healthy and barely use my coverage, but I'm still paying more every year. Why isn't there a discount for people like me?
Answer: Unfortunately, Medicare was designed to be more of a social insurance system. Meaning that everyone shares the cost of coverage regardless of how much you personally use it. While it may feel unfair, the tradeoff is that when your health does change, you'll have full coverage to help meet your needs.
When will my provider send my Annual Notice of Change?
Answer: Your provider is required to mail the Annual Notice of Change no later than September 30th each year!
How do I switch back to Original Medicare from a Medicare Advantage plan, and will I face any penalties or coverage gaps?
Answer: You can switch back to Original Medicare from a Medicare Advantage plan during the Annual Enrollment period (October 15th-December 7th) or during the Open Enrollment period (January 1st-March 31st), with no penalty for making the switch.
How can I lower my Medicare Part B premium if my income drops after retirement?
Answer: If your income drops after retirement, you can request a reduction in your Part B premium by filing Form SSA-44 with Social Security, which allows you to report a life-changing event like retirement that caused your income to decrease. Medicare Part B premiums are based on your income from two years prior, so if you retired recently, you may be paying a higher Income Related Monthly Adjustment Amount surcharge based on your old working income. Appealing this can save you hundreds of dollars a month while your lower retirement income catches up in the system.
What is the maximum out-of-pocket limit for Medicare Advantage plans?
Answer: The federal maximum out-of-pocket limit for Medicare Advantage plans is $9,350 for in-network services. Once you have hit that limit, your plan will cover 100% of any covered service for the rest of the year. The great news is that many Medicare Advantage plans have set their maximum out-of-pocket limit well below the federal maximum.
How do Medicare copays work?
Answer: A copay is the fixed amount of money you pay for a service. For example, $20 to see your primary care doctor or $45 to see a specialist. These prices vary depending on your specific Medicare plans.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Working with a Medicare agent allows you to build a lifelong relationship with an agent who will advocate for you and help you find the best plan for you. Having an agent who is there to answer the confusing questions you may have year-round can be very beneficial when issues arise.
