Q&A with Gwendolyn Brown

Why are people leaving Medicare Advantage plans?

Answer: That answer would only be speculation and it would vary with different clientele. There is a decrease in coverage with the growth of enrollments. There are more rules and regulations when it comes to coverage with an Advantage plan, then there is with using regular Medicare and a supplemental plan. Although many people find Advantage plans to be more affordable and that is why they opted to initially try it. There are also people that are satified with their Advantage plans. That could be because they are relatively healthy and seldom need long-term or chronic care in a facility, so what they do use the coverage for is usually covered with no issues.

What's the difference in copays vs deductibles?

Answer: Copays will be requested once you arrive at your providers office for your appointment. This will be paid prior to the visit. It will be a set dollar amount like $10/$25/$50/$100, for example.

Deductibles are an out-of-pocket amount that you may, or may not, meet for the medical services you received and were billed for throughout the year (annually). This amount is set for each plan by the carrier each year. If you meet the deductible, the plan normally will cover the out-of-pocket cost totally, unless there is a co-insurance on the plan. Which I have not seen in Medicare plans.

My doctor wants me to use a smartphone app for medication management and adherence. Are there any Medicare programs that support this type of digital health solution?

Answer: Since I only do sales, the only tools I am aware of regarding medications and Medicare, are those provided by the carriers. The carriers provide ways for their clients to view and order their medication more as a pricing tool. It allows client's to be aware of the monthly cost covered by the plan, their active prescriptions, their pharmacy, and any out-of-pocket cost they will need to cover themselves. So unfortunately, I am not aware of any apps directly linked to Medicare.

What do you like most about being a Medicare agent?

Answer: I like helping clear up confusion that a lot of seniors have concerning their Medicare coverage. I also enjoy giving them an individual to speak with regularly, instead of a ramdom person every time they want assistance.

I thought I signed up for both Part A and B when I got my Social Security, but now I'm getting bills for Part B. Did I miss something during the enrollment period?

Answer: Even though you sign up for both A and B, you will responsible for paying for B every month and the amount will be based on your current income. You will not be billed for part A.
