Q&A with Glorines Pardo-Garcia
What's the difference between a Medicare broker and a Medicare agent?
Answer: An agent works for the insurance company. A broker works for you.
Medicare Agent (The "Captive" Agent)
Think of them like a salesperson at a Ford dealership. They only sell Fords.
The Deal: They represent one insurance company. They know their plans inside and out, but they can't offer you a plan from a competitor—even if a rival company has lower rates or better coverage for your doctor.
Medicare Broker (The Independent Ally)
Think of them like an independent personal shopper.
The Deal: They partner with dozens of competing insurance carriers (like Aetna, Humana, and UnitedHealthcare). They plug your specific doctors, prescriptions, and budget into a system to shop the entire local market, giving you an unbiased comparison.
I need a hearing aid but I've heard Medicare doesn't cover them. Is there any way around this?
Answer: Medicare Advantage plans often include hearing aid allowance. If you have a Suplement or medigap you can add a separate dental, vision and hearing policy to cover the device. Original Medicare only does't offer any hearing aids coverage.
My Medicare Advantage plan covers dental, but I can't find a dentist who accepts it. Is this a common problem?
Answer: Yes, this is an common problem. Many seniors find that while their plan "includes" dental, the actual list of dentists who accept it is surprisingly small. This often happens because many dentists feel the reimbursement rates are too low, or they aren't part of the specific network your insurance uses.
Here is the best advice to help you find a provider:
Search by the "Network Name," not just the Plan: Your insurance might be through one company, but they often use a third-party dental specialist like DentaQuest or Delta Dental. When calling a dentist, ask if they take that specific network name—they are much more likely to recognize it than your general Medicare Advantage plan name.
Use the Official "Find a Dentist" Tool: Don't rely on old paper booklets. Use the live online search tools from your insurer—whether you're with Aetna, Humana, or UnitedHealthcare—as these are updated more frequently.
Check for "Out-of-Network" Coverage: If your plan is a PPO, you might not be strictly limited to a list. You can often see any licensed dentist you like; you’ll just pay a bit more out of pocket while the plan still covers a portion of the bill.
Consider a Standalone or Discount Plan: If your current network is just too restrictive, you might look into a standalone dental plan or a "dental discount plan." Many local dentists prefer these because there is far less paperwork involved than with Medicare Advantage.
Does Medicare pay for telehealth visits with specialists, or is it limited to primary care?
Answer: Yes, Medicare covers specialists for telehealth—it isn't just for your primary care doctor. You can see cardiologists, dermatologists, and even mental health counselors from the comfort of your home.
How do Medicare Savings Programs help with Medicare costs?
Answer: Medicare Savings Programs (MSPs) are essentially a "financial bridge" provided by your state to help cover some of the costs that Medicare doesn't.
Depending on your income and savings, these programs help in three main ways:
Paying your Part B Premium: For most people in 2026, this saves you about $202.90 every single month. Instead of this being deducted from your Social Security check, the state pays it for you.
Lowering Out-of-Pocket Costs: The most helpful level (called QMB) acts like a secondary insurance, covering your Medicare deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments so you don't get hit with big bills after a doctor's visit.
Automatic Prescription Savings: If you get into an MSP, you automatically get "Extra Help." This is a federal program that lowers your prescription drug costs, usually capping your copays at a few dollars.
Do Maximum Out-of-Pocket (MOOP) limits change every year?
Answer: Yes, Maximun Out of Pocket limits can change every year. It's important to review your Annual Notice of change sent by your insurance company each fall.
Why might Original Medicare with a Part D plan be better than a Medicare Advantage plan for frequent travelers?
Answer: With Original Medicare, you are able to access virtually any doctor's office or hospital nationwide. No referral is required. Your Medicare benefits, coverage, and costs remain consistent wherever you are. Additionally, you can obtain prescription refills at the same price at CVS or Walgreens locations in any state, eliminating the need to search for a pharmacy included on a plan-specific network.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Working with a licensed Medicare agent can provide significant advantages, especially given the complexity of the program. Because they are paid by insurance companies, their professional guidance typically comes at no cost to you.
Key reasons to work with an agent include:
1. Personalized Expertise and Education
Navigating Complexity: Agents act as "translators," explaining the differences between Part A, B, C, and D, as well as Medigap versus Medicare Advantage.
Tailored Recommendations: They analyze your specific medications, preferred doctors, and lifestyle to find plans that fit your unique situation.
Preventing Costly Mistakes: Agents help you avoid lifelong late-enrollment penalties and ensure you don't miss critical enrollment windows.
2. Time and Money Savings
Comparison Shopping: Agents have access to quoting tools that compare dozens of plans from multiple carriers side-by-side in minutes.
Rate Monitoring: Many agents act as "rate watchdogs," notifying you if your premium is set to increase and helping you shop for a more competitive rate during Open Enrollment.
Standardized Plan Selection: For Medigap plans, where benefits are standardized across companies, an agent can quickly find the carrier offering the lowest premium for the exact same coverage.
3. Ongoing Advocacy and Support
Long-Term Relationship: Unlike calling a 1-800 number at a large carrier, an agent provides a dedicated point of contact year-round.
Claims and Benefit Help: If you have trouble with a denied claim or need help understanding a bill, your agent can act as an intermediary between you and the insurance company.
Annual Reviews: Your health needs change over time. Agents offer annual check-ins to ensure your current plan still provides the best value as your prescriptions or health status evolve.
4. Unbiased Advice (Independent Brokers)
Independent brokers represent many different insurance companies rather than just one. This allows them to provide an objective overview
