Q&A with Gisele Salas
Why do some seniors end up paying lifelong penalties for Medicare Part B or Part D?
Answer: Because they did not enroll during their initial enrollment .period
Also, because they believe they’re healthy and they do not need part B and D
I’m 67, working full time, and previously had a 4-month job gap. I enrolled in Medicare A and B to avoid penalties, but SSA won’t let me disenroll from A. I haven’t claimed Social Security and don’t need Part A, which blocks my HSA. What can I do?
Answer: Enrollment in any part of Medicare part a or B prevents you from contributing to the HSA on a pre-tax basis
And also, you cannot cancel your part A Medicare unless you paid premiums into it
My parents, ages 90 and 91, can no longer afford their Medicare Supplement Plan F and do not qualify for Medicaid. What happens if they cannot pay the 20% not covered by Medicare after cancelling the supplement?
Answer: You may be eligible to enroll in a Medicare advantage plan
Although a few providers may accept Medicare only
How do I change my Medicare plan during open enrollment?
Answer: You can enroll in any new Medicare plan available i.e. Medicare advantage supplement
Prescription drug
Why is regular Medicare better than an advantage plan?
Answer: Medicare only is not necessarily better, although some providers may accept Medicare only
But it only covers 80% of your charges
And it does not offer prescription drug you would have to buy this separately
I went to a free Medicare seminar and it felt like a timeshare pitch. Are any of those events actually helpful?
Answer: Medicare seminars are very helpful in that specifically for people turning 65 they don’t know where to turn
Can I enroll in Medicare if I've never paid into Social Security due to working overseas?
Answer: You cannot enroll into Medicare. If you’re not entitled to it, you would have to have enough credits that you have accumulated over 10 years.
However, that being said you can buy into Medicare
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Medicare Asians, will you advise you and have the knowledge to find the best plan for you with the right coverage based on your needs
Can you just have A and B and not enroll in anything else and still have good coverage?
Answer: Yes, you can just have Medicare A and B
But you should enroll in Medicare advantage plan most of them have no monthly premium
And they cover prescription drugs
