Q&A with Gary Bush
If a senior is turning 65 but still working, should they enroll in Medicare or delay it?
Answer: Generally speaking they should enroll in Part A since it is usually no charge for most. Whether to enroll in Part B depends on a number of factors such as the cost and features of their group plan, how much they would pay for Part B (are they subject to IRMAA). Look at the features of the group plan vs the Medicare plan and the respective costs - both premium and out of pocket costs.
Can my Medigap insurer terminate my policy?
Answer: Not as long as you continue to pay the premiums. If they go out of business there could be an involuntary termination but it would open up a guarantee issue situation to select another company and plan.
Do Medicare Advantage plans save money?
Answer: That depends. Each individual case can be different so it is wise to talk with someone to see what is best for you. In general if someone has lots of medical expenses the Med Supp is a better solution. If they are healthy and very few medical out of pocket expenses the MAPD plan may save them money, especially when some of the other benefits are also considered. It may also depend on whether doctors are in the network of the MAPD plans.
Can I use a health savings account (HSA) to pay Medicare premiums after I retire?
Answer: No. You can use them for your out of pocket expenses but not premiums. Note that you must also stop contributing to the HSA prior to going on Medicare.
Can I switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to a Supplemental/Medigap plan during the Annual Enrollment Period without answering health questions?
Answer: Generally you need to answer health questions when going from an MAPD pan to a Med Supp. If you do it within the first year you are in the MAPD plan you can usually make the switch on a guaranteed issue basis. You aren't restricted to the annual enrollment period. You can also do it during open enrollment (Jan 1-Mar 31). If you change to a Med Supp you will also need to add a drug plan (PDP) and any supplemental coverage you desire but the supplemental coverage can be added at any time if you qualify for it.
Do I need a doctor’s referral for Medicare to cover therapy?
Answer: It depends on your Medicare plan. If you have a Medicare Supplement or Medigap you shouldn't need a referral but some places will want you to have one before treating you. If you have a Medicare Advantage plan you will usually need a referral - especially if it is an HMO plan.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: Agents can take a lot of the guesswork out of your Medicare decision. They will look at your situation including your doctors, meds, budget, etc to give you your best options. Working with an agent is at no cost to the consumer. They also give you someone to talk to when you have questions.
