Q&A with Frank Buonomo
I'm confused about all these different Medicare costs - premiums, deductibles, copays. How do they all work together?
Answer: Everyone's situation is different due to available plans, medical requirements and prescription drugs. To best understand how they work together speak with a licensed insurance agent. Generally, Advantage, medigap supplements and drug plans all work with Medicare coverage.
Can I get a Medigap plan with Guaranteed Issue if I'm losing my employer coverage?
Answer: If you are 65 or older you will have an Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) based upon the loss of your employer coverage. Since this is your IEP, you will have a guaranteed enrollment without medical underwriting.
Does Medicare fully cover nursing home care, and are there alternatives?
Answer: The short answer to question is no, Medicare does not cover nursing home care. Medicare will cover skilled nursing facilities as long as it is related to a hospital stay such as post-operative care. To receive coverage for nursing home care, a long-term care policy, insurance coverage with care provisions or an annuity that provides distributions due to care requirements are available. It should be noted that these policies require medical underwriting and would not be unavailable at the time care is needed. Importantly, purchasing these types of policies should be done when in good health to prevent application denials.
What are some ways to save on prescription drug costs?
Answer: You can save money on prescriptions by using the mail order option instead of the local pharmacy option. Most drug plans have preferred local pharmacies and that can provide savings. Also, generic mediations if they are approved by your physicians can reduce prescription costs.
Can I change my Supplemental/Medigap plan at any time?
Answer: You are able to change your Medicare supplement plan at any time, but you will need to qualify through underwriting. Your health will determine if you qualify for another plan. Some states have special enrollment periods sometimes known as the birthday rule. If you live in a state that offers these periods, you will have a time window around 60 days from your birthday to change your supplement without underwriting.
Why is regular Medicare better than an advantage plan?
Answer: Regular Medicare has a larger physician network than advantage plans. For regular Medicare, the network includes any doctors that accept Medicare patients. Advantage plans limit coverage to those doctors that participate in plan's network. Regular Medicare partnered with a Medicare supplement may pay for most or all deductibles depending on age when enrolled in the supplement. The trade-off is the there is a monthly premium for the supplement while many advantage plans can be enrolled with little or no monthly premium. A licensed insurance agent can identify what plan options are best for your individual financial situation.
Am I eligible for a Special Enrollment Period if I lose employer coverage?
Answer: Yes, you are in a Special Enrollment Period if you lose employer coverage. You must enroll in Medicare withing 60 days of losing your coverage. You may also be eligible to a Special Election Period dure to other specific life events.
How do you educate clients who are completely new to Medicare?
Answer: I ask about their current circumstances including their medical needs and prescriptions. I identify available resources to assist them with Medicare enrollment and the insurance options available to them.
What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?
Answer: I like meeting new people and learning about them. I feel enriched by assisting people who need help or are seeking information to improve their lives.
