Q&A with Donald Brown
What's the biggest frustration Medicare agents have when helping clients enroll?
Answer: I think the main frustration is asking for medicines or doctors and gathering all the information only to have the customer sign up on their own or with another agent calling on the phone without prior authorization. I am independent and I am paid only when I sign you up for the plan that is best for you. The customer does not pay a commission and each company pays the agent. The cost will be the same if you use an agent or not.
I picked the plan with the lowest premium, but now every doctor visit feels like a surprise bill. Should I have gone with a higher premium instead?
Answer: In most cases the plans I recommend have no premium. I am surprised that usually doctor co pays and costs are in the benefit kit. If you did not receive it, you can usually look online. Every year plan benefits change, so you should review any annual change in benefits companies send every October. If you talk with an independent agent, they should be able to help you select the best plan for you in the area.
How do discount cards and resources affect my Medicare Prescription Drug plan?
Answer: You may find that most Tier 1 and Tier 2 drugs will have a cheaper co-pay than a discount card or manufacturers discount card or other non profit organization plans. However Tier 3,4, or 5 drugs maybe more expensive in the plan versus outside sources that may be available to you. I advise my beneficiaries to look to see if you can qualify for manufacturers discount or non profit organizations to see if they can help to keep your costs as low as possible. As far as a Medicare Advantage plan if you fill a prescription out of the network it does not count toward your deductible if the plan has one and it does not count toward your out of pocket maximum of $2,100 for the year.
Why is it helpful to follow up with your parents after discussing Medicare?
Answer: When selecting a Medicare Advantage plan or Medicare Supplement plan it is difficult to remember all the information. Reviewing the benefits are important to prevent any surprises and parents know what is covered and what is not covered.
Can I use a health savings account (HSA) to pay Medicare premiums after I retire?
Answer: Yes. My understanding is that HRAs can be used for insurance premiums including Medicare premiums. I usually advise seniors to balance out 401k or IRA contributions by add more funds to HRAs.
What is Medicare Part B?
Answer: Medicare Part B pays for doctors and in some cases medicine that is injected by a doctor. Part B has a monthly premium based on income and the minimum cost is $202.99 for 2026.
