I came to Dixie & Ryan with questions about this 'no premium' insurance 'thing'? I was tired of the increases of premiums each year I was getting on my supplemental insurance and was looking for something different. They explained it to me...it scared me...but they helped me see that it could work for me and I signed up with UHC....They take the time to do it right for you......

I first met Ryan and Dixie while they were set up in the RX I was working at. Both, are very personable and down to earth. Ryan easily sold me on the United Healthcare plan because of his understanding of what is important for healthcare and his complete knowledge of the United Healthcare plan. I’ve since met many other people with this plan and they all say the same thing…they love it! I believe it is well worth your time in checking out United Healthcare with Pinnacle Insurance! Kind, knowledgeable and will answer all your questions. What more could you ask for? And yes, they will save you money! Cindy Horstman

Q&A with Dixie Obbink

Can you change Medicare Supplement plans at any time?

Answer: You can, but approval is not guaranteed. You will need to go through the health underwriting questions. Once you have completed this process, you could be approved and see what premium they offer you or you could also be denied.

How can I verify if a Medicare Advantage plan's advertised benefits are legit?

Answer: The most reliable way to know if by calling a local agent. The Medicare Advantage plans have different coverages and networks and go by your zip code and county you live in.

Can I keep seeing my current doctors if I switch to a Medicare Advantage plan, or do I have to find new ones?

Answer: Medicare Advantage plans use networks. It would be best to speak to an agent so they can look up all of your current doctors to see if they are in the network of the plan that you are interested in.

I have Original Medicare, a Medigap Plan G, and a Part D plan, but I'm still facing high costs for my specialty medication. What options exist for someone in my situation?

Answer: Your options really depend on what medication you are taking. There could possibly be some assistance programs available but that depends on some factors. Depending on where you are located there may be a specialty pharmacy in your area and they may have a program that could be of assistance. If your specialty medication is not on the formulary of your Part D plan, you could ask your doctor to request a formulary exception.

What Medicare penalties are most common?

Answer: The most common Medicare penalties are Part B late enrollment penalty, along with Part D. Timely enrollment is important to avoid these penalties. There are certain circumstances where you can delay signing up for Medicare without penalties, but it may require specific forms. Talk to a licensed Medicare agent to help you navigate the deadlines and determining if your current coverage is creditable.

Can I use a health savings account (HSA) to pay Medicare premiums after I retire?

Answer: You are able to use your funds for allowed medical expenses. Some of those are: Medicare Part B premiums, Part D premiums, deductibles, copays, coinsurance, dental, vision and hearing services. For a more in-depth conversation, I would contact an agent or local tax professional.

Does Medicare cover eye exams, or are seniors left paying too much?

Answer: Medicare does not cover for routine eye exams. If there is a specific diagnosis for an eye disease, Medicare Part B will help cover a portion of the eye exam. There may be plans available in your area referred to as Part C or Medicare Advantage plans. These types of plans can sometimes have a vision benefit included. If you have chosen a medigap aka Medicare supplement plan, some of these plans have a vision rider you can add for additional premium or some offer a discount program.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Working with a Medicare agent will help simplify the enrollment process for you. It gives you the opportunity to keep it personalized and ask questions geared towards your needs. It also allows you to receive help after you have signed up on a plan with an agent. If you are new to Medicare, they will help you to stay within the correct timeframe, so you don't incur penalties.

I missed my Medigap window by a few months and now no one will cover me without underwriting. Why isn't this rule more well known?

Answer: Please know that you can speak to an agent who sells Medicare plans at no cost to you. Most agents can answer these questions for you and help with these types of questions/guidelines. Outside of speaking to someone, you can find these answers at Medicare.gov and this information is in the Medicare and You book. I know it can be difficult when you don't know what you are looking for. Some representatives at the Social Security and Medicare offices do share this information.
