Q&A with Deborah Bates

What do you enjoy most about working with Medicare clients?

Answer: I love educating people and seeing their expressions when they begin to understand the complicated medicare system. My passion is for helping people, whether through education, customer service, or just helping my clients find the answers to all their medicare questions, whether simple or complex.

Can you describe a time when you helped a client navigate a complex Medicare issue?

Answer: Just today. I helped someone figure out how to appeal their healthcare need to their plan. It was not hard for me, but it made their life easier.

Why is the new $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum for drug costs important?

Answer: Medications will no longer cost up to $8000 out of pocket for those medicare recipients with expensive meds. I help my clients find the best option to cover their individual medication needs.

Will I be penalized if I do not enroll in Medicare when I turn 65?

Answer: You can be penalized if you don't have a creditable coverage plan. Most employer group healthcare plans are creditable. So there is no need worry if you work past 65.

What are some ways to save on prescription drug costs?

Answer: If your plan doesn't cover your meds well, you can use a discount card like GoodRx or Singlecare. You could also search online for online pharmacies that can save you money like Cost Plus. You may also qualify for "extra help" from Medicare, or get help from the manufacturer or through a foundation.

What does Medicare Part B cover? Is it enough?

Answer: After a $257 deductible (in 2025), part b covers 80% of most medically necessary services when using a doctor or facility that accepts medicare assignment. Some places may charge 15% more, but still accept Medicare patients. You or your supplement would be responsible for the excess charges.
