Q&A with David Tom Rankin

Should I sign my parents up for Medicare?

Answer: Not easily answered. What are all the options available in their situation? Are they eligible? What is their financial situation? What is their medical situation? What is the availability of the providers they need? Where do they live and spend their time? Need to discuss with the family... candidly and thoughtfully.

What is the biggest mistake seniors make when enrolling in Medicare?

Answer: Choosing a company (and it's plan) for the bells and whistles rather than the combination of medical providers, annual maximum-out-of-pocket level and medical benefit co-pay costs.

How do you approach educating clients who are new to Medicare versus those who are considering switching plans?

Answer: More of how Medicare and the plan works for the new folks. Switching plans involves why the current plan (and everything that entails) is unsatisfactory compared to how the switched plan would be better.

Is occupational therapy covered by Medicare Advantage with UnitedHealth?

Answer: Specific coverage questions are always best answered by contacting the respective customer service folks of that respective company. General Rule: Medicare Advantage covers everything that is covered by Original Medicare and prescribed by a medical professional for a medical need.

What demographic challenges will Medicare face in the coming years?

Answer: The normal ones of medicine... an increasing number of folks who want the services of competent health providers.

What are some ways to ensure your parents feel supported during the Medicare decision-making process?

Answer: Include them in the discussions. Discussions best held with a local licensed, appointed, certified agent you can establish a relationship with, who can explain how Medicare works.

I just started on Medicare Part D, and I'm confused about whether my new cholesterol medication counts toward my coverage gap. Can you explain?

Answer: Yes, it does. All prescription meds you get through your PART D plan go into the sum total that make up the maximum-out-of-pocket that is your 'coverage gap'.

Why would you not choose a medicare Advantage plan?

Answer: Depends on how you view medical coverage. Are you willing to pay up front and receive benefits on the back end when you need them? Or. Would you rather keep your money and pay a small co-pay when you get medical services, along with a bunch of coverages that Original Medicare doesn't cover? Choose the one that best fits your finances and lets you sleep well at night.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Agents work at no charge to the beneficiary. If it's a local agent, one can actually establish a relationship with someone in the business who works on your behalf.

I need a hearing aid but I've heard Medicare doesn't cover them. Is there any way around this?

Answer: Most Medicare Advantage Plans (PART C) have a Hearing Aid Benefit including a hearing test to establish the degree of hearing loss.
