Q&A with Daniel Weeks

What's the most important question I should be asking about Medicare that I probably haven't thought of yet?

Answer: What's the difference between a Medicare Advantage plan (MAPD) and a Medigap Supplement? How do they work with Medicare?

Are Medicare Advantage plans really "free," or is that just clever marketing?

Answer: There are $0/premium plans out there, but you must be enrolled in Part B which has a premium of $185/month unless you get assistance through the state or county per your income level. Obviously with no premium, one can expect more out of pocket expenses when seeing doctors or hospitals, generally.

What is the biggest mistake seniors make when enrolling in Medicare?

Answer: Simply choosing a plan based on their spouse or friend or what they used for work. Give yourself an opportunity to be educated on the options and what works best specifically for your situation.

I have multiple medications; how can I ensure my Medicare Part D plan covers them all without breaking the bank?

Answer: We can check that through Medicare.gov. Also, Medicare capped recipient's maximum out of pocket at $2000/year starting 2025 for prescribed medications.

Will Medicare Advantage plans start offering more digital health tools like apps by 2030?

Answer: There is nothing set in stone guaranteeing there will be digital tools like apps. But everything is streaming that way. Many plans offer digital health tools like digital onboarding and communications through emails.

How well does Medicare support seniors who need assisted living, or does it fall short?

Answer: Unfortunately, Medicare does not cover any assisted living care. The only thing Medicare pays for is Skilled Nursing care, which is after a hospital stay, recommended by a doctor with a plan of care in which medical care is needed and the patient is progressively getting better. Fortunately, my company provides such education and solutions to help pay for that cost.

As a senior, what should I know about the differences between Original Medicare and Medicare Advantage before I choose?

Answer: With Original Medicare and Medigap Supplement, you get a Medicare Network. Meaning you can go anywhere in the country Medicare is accepted without any referrals. The Medigap Supplement is guaranteed renewable for life. As long as you pay the premium, your plan and benefits are guaranteed to never change or go away. With Original Medicare, you get to choose your specific drug coverage. You can choose any stand-a-long drug plan available in your area.

With Advantage plans, they run like an HM)/PPO (like your old employer insurance). The doctor or clinic has to accept your specific plans benefits terms and rates. Advantage plans are annually renewable. They can and in some ways do change every year. They can drop you as an individual though. They drug plan is included in the Advantage plan benefits. So there is no customization in choosing your drug plan.

I've been on disability for years and am about to turn 65. Do I automatically get Medicare because I'm on Social Security, or do I need to do something?

Answer: It should turn into SSI instead of SSDI and Medicare should automatically be signed up since social security and Medicare are connected. But I would always double check and make sure so no penalties are assessed.
