I'm worried about the 'donut hole' in my Part D plan. How do I manage my medication costs once I enter it?

Answer: The donut hole went away as part of the inflation reduction act in 2023. Part D plans now have a maximum out-of-pocket of $2100 in 2026.

Can I switch from a Medicare Advantage plan to Original Medicare with a Medigap plan mid-year if I’m diagnosed with a serious illness?

Answer: Very likely no. A Medigap plan after your initial enrollment, (six months after your part B date) Could require medical underwriting and also have pre-existing waiting periods.

I'm turning 65 next month; what are the first steps I should take regarding Medicare enrollment?

Answer: If you are planning on going on Medicare you should connect with the Social Security office to get signed up for both parts A and B. Please note that if you are continuing to work past age 65 and you are covered by an employer plan that has more than 20 employees you can continue to be covered by your employer and avoid any late enrollment penalties for part B if you wish to delay enrollment and stay covered by your employer plan.

Can I backdate my Medicare enrollment if I missed my initial window due to a medical emergency?

Answer: If you missed your window due to a medical emergency is possible you may have a special enrollment. That will help you obtain coverage.

I thought I signed up for both Part A and B when I got my Social Security, but now I'm getting bills for Part B. Did I miss something during the enrollment period?

Answer: If you are receiving Social Security benefits, part B should be automatically deducted from your monthly check. If you are not receiving Social Security benefits, you will get billed for part B.

Who can help me figure out this Medicare "maze and alphabet soup" it's so confusing.

Answer: Find a local agent you can sit down with. There are many local agents that offer multiple carriers and products. Find one that really focuses on education to help you understand what you have from Medicare and how the supplemental option you’re choosing fits your needs.

Do I need extra protection like Critical Illness Insurance if I am on Medicare?

Answer: Each person is different, but a critical illness plan can certainly help if you experience a critical illness. If you have a Medicare advantage plan, it may help you fill some of the costs associated with the illness.

What is the biggest disadvantage of Medicare Advantage?

Answer: Potentially the network. Some Medicare advantage plans have large nationwide networks others may have smaller local networks or specific hospital systems that they work with. They may or may not all offer out of network coverage. Medicare advantage plans you have to understand how to best use your plan.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: An independent agent works on behalf of the consumer to make sure they find and understand supplemental plans that fits their needs. Independent agents also provide ongoing support to its consumers if there are any issues that should arise with their plans throughout the year.
