Q&A with Chris Koehl

How long after I apply for Medicare A&B will I receive my Medicare card?

Answer: You will typically get your Medicare card on the mail in about 2 -4 weeks after you apply for Part A&B. If you need assistance applying for Medicare Part A&B we help people do that online at our office. This can save you a lot of time vs trying to set up an appointment with Social Security.

I'm on an expensive specialty medication. Will the 2025 Part D changes help someone in my situation?

Answer: In most cases anyone who is taking expensive medications will benefit from the 2025 Part D Changes. The coverage gap (this was also called the donut hole) was eliminated on January 1, 2025. Also, the maximum out of pocket limit that an individual can pay for all of their prescription per year is $2100 in 2026. So in summary, yes, for anyone taking expensive medications, the new rules put in place in 2025 could save you thousands of dollars per year on your prescription costs.

I'm on a fixed income and struggling to afford my medications. What's this Extra Help program I've heard about for Medicare Part D?

Answer: The Medicare Extra Help Program, also called LIS, is a program that can help to reduce prescription drug costs. If you are on Medicaid through the state, you will be automatically enrolled in the Extra Help program. If not, you will need to apply, which is a pretty simple application. There are income and asset limits to be able to qualify. In 2025 the annual income limit is $23,475 for an individual and $31,275 for married couples. If you need help applying for the program, we are happy to assist. You can contact us directly.
