Q&A with C. Faye Ricketts
I picked a Medicare Advantage plan last year, and I'm not sure if my hearing aids are covered. How do I figure this out?
Answer: Good question. There are several ways you can find your benefits:
You can take a look at your Summary of Benefits booklet you received. If you have an agent, you can call them and ask them for a benefit review. Also, you can call the member services number on the back of your medical card and ask them if you have a specific benefit.
How can I get dental and vision coverage with Medicare?
Answer: The easiest way to get dental and vision coverage with Medicare is through a medicare advantage plan. However there are stand alone dental and vision plans as well. Come companies even bundle them. In some cases, the coverage is more robust through a medicare advantage and oftentimes for no extra out of pocket cost and many cases, $0 for the whole medical, dental and vision plan.
If you had to pick just one, what's the worst Medicare-related decision someone can make?
Answer: The worst Medicare related decision a person could make, in my opinion, is not picking up a drug plan when first eligible. While the penalty may be small in the beginning, it is in continuity and can be costly long term.
I'm worried about the 'donut hole' in my Part D plan. How do I manage my medication costs once I enter it?
Answer: Due to the Inflation Reduction Act has pretty much been eliminated the ‘donut hole’. As of 2025, a beneficiary has a maximum out of pocket limit, ($2100 in 2026). Once the troop costs for medication hits that limit, the out of pocket cost is $0.
In what situations will Medicare pay for medical services in a foreign hospital?
Answer: In most instances, Meeicare doesn’t cover foreign care. However if it is an emergency, it may be covered if the beneficiary is near a US border. I highly recommend that a beneficiary picks up foreign travel coverage when traveling abroad. Policies are very reasonable and a financial lifesaver should an emergency arise during the travel.
I've heard that once you're on Medicare, you might not need life insurance as much. Is that true?
Answer: Totally not true! Medicare is for your health insurance needs, not necessarily for your life insurance needs. As a senior, you want to be sure you have adequate coverage for your health insurance needs; however - you need to consider how you want to cover end of life expenses. Start by Doing a NEEDS analysis where you’re asked about your current financial situation, demographics, family, debt etc. Once there is a full picture, a licensed professional can help you figure out how much insurance you need to cover expenses and leave your family unburdened should something happen to you.
My friend gets SilverSneakers with her plan and I don't-how are we both paying for Medicare and getting such different stuff?
Answer: Carriers have plans each varying for specific needs. One company’s plan may have Silver Sneakers while still offering another plan that may not have it. It’s important to meet with a local agent to discuss your specific needs to make sure you’re getting what you need from a plan.
Can I use my Medicare benefits right away in January?

Why do my copays or premiums look different in January?
Answer: Every year around September, you should get an ANNUAL NOTICR OF CHANGE (ANOC) that will explain what’s changing in your plan for the upcoming year. There you will see a side by side comparison of current plan and upcoming changes. Plans can change every year and at that time it’s best to get in contact with your agent to look at the changes and if, desired look at other plans.
