Q&A with Burman Clark
What happens to my Medicare coverage if I enter a skilled nursing facility for rehab but then need long-term care?
Answer: Short-term rehab is covered by Medicare Part A for the first 20 days. Days 21-100 the consumer is responsible for coinsurance and after 100 days, coverage under Medicare ends. Medicare was never intended to be a Long-Term Care solution; however, some folks may qualify for Medicaid, possibly Veterans benefits, but the lion's share of consumers are self-pay spending down their lifelong assets.
Can I show my Original Medicare Card instead of my Medicare Advantage card, if my provider doesn't take my advantage insurance?
Answer: No, the Medicare Advantage Plan is a Medicare replacement policy, meaning, all benefits are provided by your insurance carrier. If your provider does not accept the plan, you should confirm if there are out-of-network benefits - perhaps a PPO plan. If in an HMO setting, work with your insurance carrier to find an in-network provider.
