Q&A with Angela Bertetto
Does Medicare cover Ozempic and other drugs prescribed for weight loss?
Answer: Currently the rule is no. Medicare partD prescription drug plans can’t cover GLP1 medications like Ozempic for weight loss only. If you have a medical condition like Type 2 Diabetes or cardiovascular disease it can be covered by your Part D or Advantage plan. This would depend on your plans formulary and whether the medication is on the plans drug list.
Why is the new $2,000 out-of-pocket maximum for drug costs important?
Answer: In 2026 the maximum out of pocket for drugs is $2100. Once a senior reaches this amount they enter the catastrophic phase and pay $0 for covered drugs for the rest of the year. This eliminates the “doughnut hole” phase.
How well does Medicare support seniors who need assisted living, or does it fall short?
Answer: Original Medicare does not offer assisted living for support because it’s not medical. It does cover short term skilled nursing care and hospice care.
There are programs that help seniors 55 and older to be able to live in the community with support.
What's a common Medicare myth that even some agents still believe?
Answer: A common misconception some people, including agents, believe is that once you enroll in a MAPD plan you can’t change it.
In many cases you can make changes at certain times and with special circumstances.
I hope that any people who want to make changes would consult a broker to see if they qualify for a change of plan even outside of AEP
Does Medicare cover mammograms, and how often can I get them?
Answer: Yes. Medicare does cover mammograms.
Woman 40 years and older can get annual mammogram screenings.
However, if you need a diagnostic mammogram, and it’s medically necessary you may get more than one per year.
The cost is usually free if the provider accepts Medicare. It’s always best to check with your provider before you schedule a test.
So I heard something about Medicare drug costs being capped at $2,000 in 2025. Is that really happening or just talk?
Answer: In 2025 the maximum out-of-pocket for “covered” drugs is $2000. Once you reach that amount you enter what is called the catastrophic phase where covered drugs will cost you $0. In 2026 the amount will be $2100.
I have multiple medications; how can I ensure my Medicare Part D plan covers them all without breaking the bank?
Answer: This is where having a Medicare broker in your corner makes all the difference. A broker/agent such as myself can review your plans coverage and any changes that are going to be made to your plan and let you know how much you will be paying out of pocket. There are a lot of plan options out there and I can help you find the best one for you.
