Q&A with Amy Kilber
Should I sign my parents up for Medicare?
Answer: This depends on many factors, what kind of insurance do they have now, if they have employer or retiree insurance they may be able to delay signing up for Medicare.
It's important to involve your parents in the decision as Medicare is an individual decision, your parents should review their options and determine which plans will cover their current providers, medications, travel needs, and budget considerations.
If your parents are turning 65 and don’t have other creditable health coverage, enrolling in Medicare during their Initial Enrollment Period is usually the safest choice to avoid gaps or penalties.
You can absolutely help with research and the application, but they’ll need to sign the forms themselves, unless you have a power of attorney and they aren’t able to make the decision.
What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?
Answer: A Medicare agent will offer you personalized plan guidance. They will take the time to understand your needs and concerns. They will review your doctors, prescriptions and budget to narrow down plans that will actually fit your health and financial needs.
Medicare parts and plan options can be confusing, and everyone has an opinion on them. Just because a plan works well for your neighbor, friend or family member doesn't mean the same plan will work well for you.
Having support after enrollment is important, local Medicare agents are here to help you with questions after you enroll in a plan.
Medicare agents are up to date on the changes in the Medicare rules and plans each year.
There is no cost to you for the added benefits and service of having an agent help you.
How does Medicare Part B handle coverage for preventative screenings like mammograms?
Answer: Screening & Baseline Mammograms: Covered as preventive services. If you use a provider or facility that accepts Medicare assignment, you pay $0.
Diagnostic Mammograms: Covered when medically necessary. After you meet your Part B deductible, you pay 20% of the Medicare-approved amount.
A baseline Mammogram is covered once in your lifetime, usually between the ages of 35-39. Screenings are covered once annually. Diagnostic mammograms can be covered more than once a year if medically neccessary.
Your doctor may recommend other services like 3-D imaging that Medicare does not cover. This could end up in additional costs for you. Make sure to ask your doctor about the reasons for these recommendations and what Medicare will actually cover.
