Q&A with Alyson Collins
I'm enrolled in a Medigap Plan F, and I'm not sure how my emergency room visits are handled. Is there a copay I should expect?
Answer: With Medigap Plan F, you won’t have a copay for emergency room visits. Plan F is the most comprehensive Medigap plan — it covers all Medicare-approved costs that Original Medicare doesn’t pay, including the Part A deductible, Part B deductible, coinsurance, and excess charges.
I've heard that once you're on Medicare, you might not need life insurance as much. Is that true?
Answer: Medicare will cover your healthcare needs, but it doesn’t replace life insurance — Medicare only pays for medical care, not final expenses, debts, or income replacement for loved ones. If you have a spouse, children, or anyone relying on your income or if you want to leave money for funeral costs or an inheritance, life insurance can still play an important role even after you’re on Medicare.
I just moved to a new state. Do I need to do anything with my Medicare coverage?
Answer: If you have Original Medicare or Original Medicare with a Supplement (Medigap), your coverage also moves with you, but premiums and available plans can vary by state. If you have a Medicare Advantage or Part D plan, you’ll need to check your new service area and may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period to switch plans. Always update your address with Social Security to keep everything current.
What's the most cost-effective way for a healthy 65-year-old to structure their Medicare coverage?
Answer: If you prioritize lowest cost now and are okay with network rules → Start with a $0 premium Medicare Advantage plan with built-in drug coverage.
If you want long-term cost predictability and nationwide access → Choose Original Medicare + Medigap Plan G + low-cost Part D right away to lock in health-based approval.
Who qualifies for Medicare coverage if they are under 65?
Answer: An individual that can qualify if they have End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) or if they have been disabled for at least 24 months.
I've got a Medicare Advantage plan, and I'm curious if my upcoming eye surgery is fully covered or if I'll owe extra out of pocket.
Answer: Your Medicare Advantage plan will usually cover eye surgery if it’s medically necessary, but you may still owe a copay or coinsurance based on your plan’s rules. Coverage depends on whether your surgeon and facility are in-network and if prior authorization is approved. To know your exact costs, contact your plan’s member services with your procedure details for a breakdown.
