Q&A with Albert Ojeda

Does Medicare Advantage cover acupuncture or alternative therapies in some plans?

Answer: Yes. Some Medicare Advantage plans may cover acupuncture and certain alternative or complementary therapies, but coverage varies by insurer and plan.

Original Medicare generally only covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain under limited conditions. It does not typically cover services such as massage therapy, naturopathy, or chiropractic care beyond medically necessary spinal manipulation.

How much do agents charge to help clients to enroll

Answer: Agents are not allowed to charge Medicare beneficiaries for our services. We are compensated directly by the insurance companies.

What's the key difference in how Medicare Advantage and Medigap handle out-of-network providers?

Answer: The main difference is that Medicare Advantage plans usually have provider networks, so if you see a doctor outside the network, your care may not be covered at all (especially with an HMO) or you may have to pay more (with a PPO). In contrast, Medigaps work with Original Medicare and have no networks, so you can see any doctor in the U.S. who accepts Medicare, and your supplement plan helps pay your share of the costs.

If I’m in a Medicare Advantage plan, will I still need prior authorization for procedures next year?

Answer: You will likely still need prior authorization for many procedures next year (2026) and possibly in the years ahead If you’re enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan. MA plans almost always require prior authorization for certain services before they’ll agree to cover them (especially higher-cost items like hospital stays, chemotherapy, durable medical equipment, etc.). This requirement will continue into 2026 and likely future years because Medicare Advantage insurers use prior authorization as a tool to manage costs and utilization. Starting in 2026, new federal rules are meant to make prior authorization easier by setting firm deadlines for insurer decisions and requiring clearer explanations when coverage is denied.

Is occupational therapy covered by Medicare Advantage with UnitedHealth?

Answer: Yes, occupational therapy is generally covered by Medicare Advantage plans offered through UnitedHealthCare (UnitedHealth) as long as it’s medically necessary, similar to how Original Medicare Part B covers it. Medicare Advantage plans, including those from UnitedHealth, are required by law to cover at least the same services that Original Medicare covers. Occupational therapy falls under that requirement.

If we choose a Medicare Advantage plan and later regret it, can we go back to Original Medicare without penalties?

Answer: Yes, you can return to Original Medicare from a Medicare Advantage plan without any penalties during Annual Enrollment Period (Oct. 15–Dec. 7) or the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan. 1–Mar. 31). However, you must enroll in a standalone Part D drug plan within 63 days to avoid late penalties.

What are the reasons why I should work with a Medicare agent?

Answer: Working with a Medicare agent can help simplify a complex and often confusing process. A licensed Medicare agent can explain your coverage options, compare plans from multiple insurers, help you avoid costly mistakes, and ensure you choose a plan that fits your healthcare needs and budget.
