Q&A with Keaton Lewis

What's your go-to strategy for helping someone decide between Medicare Advantage and Medigap?

Answer: When explaining the differences between the two, I like to say the Medigap is the "prepay" option and Medicare Advantage is the "pay as you go" option. If a client knows they are going to have some serious health issues and lots of medical care, i would recommend the Medigap route. However if they are pretty healthy and especially if they are looking to save money, I usually recommend Medicare Advantage, so they can "pay as they go" instead of paying up front whether or not they need it.

How can I estimate my total Medicare costs if I have a chronic condition like diabetes?

Answer: It can be tricky on how to get an exact estimate, but typically you can see what your costs would be for a specialist visit that would treat your chronic condition. On top of that, you can easily see what your maximum out-of-pocket (MOOP) would be for your plan. The nice thing there is that your MOOP is your safety net, and if you had your worst year ever medically, that would be the total amount you would pay in a year's time, no matter how many treatments or doctor's visits you had.

How does Medicare Part B handle coverage for preventative screenings like mammograms?

Answer: For most preventative screenings, Medicare covers it at no cost to you! This is to incentivize you to stay on top of your health. A lot of times Medicare Advantage plans will even reward you for taking care of these preventative screenings.

What's one piece of advice you wish every senior knew before picking a Medicare plan?

Answer: Don't just pick a plan for it's attractive free stuff. ALWAYS look at a plan for it's drug coverage for your prescriptions and it's network of doctors FIRST. Then you can look at the fun stuff!

What benefits are there to working with a Medicare Agent near me vs remote/virtual?

Answer: You can have an agent assist you from all over the country. However, they may not be contracted with all the carriers available to you, and more importantly they don't know or understand the nuances of your specific area. They only look to sell you what they can work with, not always what's in your best interest.

What's the most important question I should be asking about Medicare that I probably haven't thought of yet?

Answer: This might sound a bit cliche since it's coming from an agent, but I would ask: "What are the reasons why I should work with an agent?" Over the years I've had many clients and come across many beneficiaries who are confused and overwhelmed with relentless, intrusive, and misleading advertising. It has become worse that it's ever been in the last year alone. As an agent, it's my job to understand what's happening in the industry so you won't have to! Trying to understand and navigate everything is like trying to get a college degree without the help of a teacher. I'm here to help relieve the burden, and it costs you nothing to use me!
